In 1818 D’Aguesseau wrote that shares were more of a hope than an actual asset. He could never have imagined that his considerations would remain true even two centu- ries later. In particular today the “ papier ” is no longer a financial instrument which is an end in itself, which has fulfilled its “task”, it is an artistic and cultural document and it bears witness to a history of design, family capitalism, people and professions. A free interpretation of a selection of concepts expressed by D’Aguesseau shall en- able us to accompany this short reading while maintaining the spirit of the collection. 9
